The resource of the PD-8 engine for the Russian SJ-100 is currently about 80 cycles, but it is incorrect to perceive this figure as the final service life of the power plant. Aviation expert SkyExpert explained that the indicator is related to the actual operating time of experimental engines at the time of certification and will increase as operational statistics accumulate.

The reason for the discussion was a comment by Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Gennady Abramenkov. In an interview with "Expert", he stated that the current resource of the PD-8 does not determine the competitiveness of the SJ-100. According to him, there is already a plan for a further increase in the engine's resource, and its estimated value exceeds the possible operating time of the aircraft itself. Abramenkov also recalled that a similar approach was used to increase the resource of the French SaM146.

SkyExpert drew attention to another aspect of the issue. According to his assessment, 80 cycles is not a figure that developers arbitrarily assigned to the engine as its maximum resource. At the time of submitting documents for certification, the experimental machines had exactly this confirmed operating time. Therefore, it is impossible to indicate a significantly larger indicator in the documents without corresponding actual statistics.

The logic here is quite simple: the engine must first actually operate for a certain number of cycles, after which specialists check its condition and evaluate the results obtained. If the operating time is 80 cycles and after disassembly the engine meets the requirements, this indicator can be documented. It is impossible to record a conditional thousand cycles instead of it without appropriate evidence.

Therefore, the current 80 cycles should be considered as the confirmed resource to date, and not as a limit after which the PD-8 will need to be replaced. As further tests and operation continue, the accumulated statistics will allow for an increase in the assigned resource.
