The Shvabe holding (part of Rostec) has developed an optical system for wireless data transmission in conditions of strong electromagnetic interference. The new solution operates in the ultraviolet range and is primarily intended for industrial facilities where conventional radio channels are useless.

The development is a special lens that captures scattered UV radiation and focuses it on a photodetector. The key feature is a built-in optical filter that suppresses background noise and leaves only the useful signal. According to the developers, the prototype already demonstrates a high level of useful signal, which opens up prospects for creating full-fledged UV communication channels.
At industrial facilities, powerful electric motors, welding equipment, and transformers create serious interference for radio signals. Because of this, telemetry transmission from sensors becomes unstable, and the control of conveyors and robotic manipulators becomes difficult. The UV channel is not subject to such interference and can operate even without direct line of sight between the receiver and transmitter – the signal bypasses obstacles, which reduces the number of "dead zones".
In the future, the technology is planned to be used in high-load airports. The optical channel can be used to transmit navigation data, telemetry, and aircraft communication with ground services, without creating interference for aviation instruments.
In addition to communication tasks, Shvabe lenses can be used for diagnosing high-voltage equipment: they are capable of detecting weak UV radiation that occurs at damage points in power lines, which allows defects to be identified before they lead to accidents.
