Russian state structures may be allowed to use foreign graphics accelerators, including Nvidia, for artificial intelligence. The reason is a shortage of domestic processors capable of handling the training and launch of powerful neural networks. As Forbes found out, the relevant amendments were prepared by a working group under the government subcommission.

Currently, critical information infrastructure facilities have strict equipment requirements: it is necessary to use trusted software and hardware complexes from Russian registries. However, there are not enough suitable accelerators for complex AI tasks in them. Therefore, it is proposed to temporarily allow foreign solutions until Russian devices of comparable power appear.
At the same time, free purchase of foreign chips will not be allowed. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will have to confirm the absence of suitable Russian solutions, and additional information protection measures will need to be agreed with the FSB. The initiative has already caused controversy: some experts consider foreign accelerators necessary for the development of neural networks, while others warn of risks to the security of critical systems.
The Ministry of Digital Development reported that the proposals have not yet been submitted to the department and require approval from relevant structures. Special attention will be paid to cybersecurity when considering the amendments. Thus, for now, it is only an initiative, not a final decision.
