The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has recommended that smart speaker owners disable the personalized responses function. This will prevent the device from using search and query history to form responses and will increase user privacy.
The risks are associated with the fact that the speaker constantly accumulates data about users: favorite music, topics of questions, a child's interests. As explained by the Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this information forms a digital profile that companies use for targeted advertising. The profile itself can become a target for leakage or unauthorized access, and the query history can reveal details of private life. A separate danger is accidental actions by children: voice purchases or activation of connected "smart home" devices without adult supervision.
To mitigate threats, experts advise disabling voice purchases in account settings, prohibiting the speaker from controlling critical devices, changing the device name, setting a new strong password, and enabling multi-factor authentication. Regular software updates and clearing query history will also help protect the device.
Yandex previously stated that their speakers are designed with strict IT security requirements in mind, and no cases of remote hacking have been recorded. Nevertheless, disabling personalized responses and payment functions remains a simple protective measure for every user.
The editorial board has previously written about the threats of smart speakers
The topic of smart speaker security is raised regularly. Roskachestvo warned that the device constantly analyzes the sound environment and is capable of forming a detailed user profile – including interests, habits, and routes. The only reliable guarantee against eavesdropping, they said, was physically disconnecting the microphone.
