250 MW of energy storage systems (ESS) will be commissioned in the Far East by winter 2028/2029. This was announced by the head of the System Operator at the 'Russian Energy Week — 2026' forum. These are industrial batteries that release energy into the grid in fractions of a second.

Coal-fired thermal power plants generate the same amount of energy around the clock and cannot instantly increase power when demand surges. Storage systems solve this problem: they release stored current in fractions of a second. In Southern Russia, 350 MW of such systems are already operating.
The Far East also plans to introduce over 1.5 GW of renewable generation (RES) based on the 2025–2026 tenders. RusHydro projects will add 2 GW of thermal capacity. A decision on a new selection will be made next year, taking into account electricity consumption for 2026.
The head of the System Operator noted that in the South, storage facilities were built in practically six months, so deadlines might be shifted. The question of an investor in the Far East is currently regulatory. Rosatom is ready to participate in the projects.
