The head of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov, met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a working visit to Yerevan. The parties discussed the concession for managing the republic's railways, investments, and transit prospects. The total investment volume during the concession period is 146 billion Armenian drams.

The concession agreement was signed in 2008 for 30 years with the right of extension. It is implemented by CJSC South Caucasian Railway (SCR), a subsidiary of Russian Railways. The total volume of investments and revenues of SCR amounted to 146 billion drams, or about $400 million. All profits went to railway development. SCR is the largest taxpayer and one of the most significant employers in Armenia.
The infrastructure is being updated: in 2021, 27 new carriages from Transmashholding were delivered, and four EP2D electric trains were purchased. The railways of Armenia are part of the 1520 mm gauge network in the post-Soviet space. Since the end of 2025, the operation of Armenian railways has become a subject of disagreement between Yerevan and Moscow. Pashinyan wants to restore the sections dismantled in the early 1990s: Yeraskh — Nakhichevan and Akhurik — Turkey. The parties agreed to create a working group to assess transit communications.
