India is ready to develop the Northern Sea Route with Russia, and to build and repair vessels for Arctic operations. This was stated by Venkatesapati Shivapermal, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India, at the IV Arctic – Regions Forum in Arkhangelsk.
Russia has a remarkable nuclear fleet with unprecedented capabilities for developing the Northern Sea Route. We are very pleased to cooperate in shipbuilding and ship repair in this region. Modern merchant ships require modern engines and hulls. All of this can be built here. For India, this creates potential areas for industrial cooperation with Russia.
The Indian representative also linked prospects for cooperation with the development of the Northern Sea Route and the Eastern Maritime Corridor. In his assessment, Russian experience in shipbuilding and high-latitude development can open new opportunities for joint projects.
The IV Arctic – Regions Forum is taking place in Arkhangelsk on August 13–14. India is a partner country of the event. The forum's business program includes a separate Russian-Indian round table dedicated to shipbuilding, the Arctic's resource base, and joint projects, including the development of the Northern Sea Route.
