Russia will order the construction of icebreakers, bulk carriers and tankers from India

India is negotiating with Russia on the construction of two icebreakers for the state corporation Rosatom at the shipyards of Swan Energy as part of supporting the development plan for the Northern Sea Route. This was reported by a source in the Indian government, writes Infra.

A delegation from the Indian company Swan Energy visited Moscow in December 2024 for a potential deal. According to the source, the trip was "very successful."

He added that Russia plans to first order icebreakers from India, and then bulk carriers, tankers and container ships.

It is expected that the agreement, which will specify the timing, cost of the project and resolve the issue of technology transfer, will be worked out and signed within 2-3 months.

Swan Energy and Cochin Shipyard did not comment on this information.

According to the government plan, from 2030, Russia intends to transport at least 150 million tons of oil, liquefied natural gas, coal and other cargo along the Northern Sea Route. It is also planned to build more than 50 icebreakers and ice-class vessels.
