The 100 billion rubles spent on the repair of the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" do not make the question of its return to service meaningless. On the contrary, abandoning the ship could lead to the loss of a much more expensive competence – carrier-based aviation, explained "Pervy Tekhnichesky" by retired Captain 1st Rank Vasily Dandykin.

In his opinion, evaluating the fate of the Project 1143.5 aircraft carrier solely through the cost of work is fundamentally wrong.

We spent 100 billion rubles. We sent more. If we translate it into financial matters, then nothing at all, not even a fleet is needed.
Vasily Dandykin, retired Captain 1st Rank

According to him, Russia has invested too much in the creation of carrier-based aviation to abandon it now. At the same time, the alternative to an aircraft carrier does not necessarily have to be only new frigates or submarines.

And who prevents these frigates and submarines from being built? By restoring the combat readiness of the aircraft carrier-cruiser, how many will be built? One frigate? What are we talking about?
Vasily Dandykin, retired Captain 1st Rank

Dandykin believes that the Russian fleet needs a balanced composition of ships – from small combat units to submarines and aircraft carriers.

Earlier, Dandykin explained that the main problems of the "Kuznetsov" are not so much related to the engines, as with the steam-power units. These systems are complex and capricious, but specialists should have already dealt with the problems.
