Fraudsters can no longer use additional devices to steal data from bank cards at ATMs – installing such reading overlays and hidden devices has now become technically impossible. Details were revealed by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Previously, criminals installed special devices on ATMs that copied data from the card's magnetic stripe and intercepted security codes.

However, the situation has now changed. The architecture of the banking system itself has become different, and familiar methods simply stopped working, explained the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The main reason is the transition to bank cards with an embedded chip. Such cards are significantly better protected than old magnetic stripes.

An additional factor is the emergence of new ATMs without the usual card reader. It is simply impossible to install overlays, hidden cameras, or fake keyboards on such devices, which fraudsters used to use.

This did not happen by itself, but was the result of a targeted modernization of the banking system and a change in the priorities of the fraudsters themselves.

Attempts by fraudsters to read data from a card's magnetic stripe through overlays and hidden cameras were called skimming. Shimming was a more complex method in which a microchip was inserted inside the ATM to read information from the card's chip.
