ODK-Saturn engineers changed the design of aircraft engine combustion chambers

New diffuser will increase power plant reliability

The Rybinsk plant ODK-Saturn has developed a new design for the diffuser of a gas turbine engine combustion chamber. This refers to the part of the power plant through which gigantic flows of superheated air pass.

Engineers proposed an unusual solution — to change the geometry of the connection between the diffuser struts and the combustion chamber walls. Instead of sharp corners, where stresses concentrate, they used special inclined sections with smooth transition radii and obtuse mating angles.

It is precisely here that extreme temperatures, vibrations, and loads arise, capable of causing microcracks and structural failure.

Additionally, it was decided to make the structure not solid, but to assemble it from several cast segments with subsequent welding into a single ring. This approach simplifies the production of large parts for modern turbines and significantly increases maintainability.

ODK-Saturn is a key manufacturer of PD-8 engines for the import-substituted “Superjet”. The power plant successfully received a type certificate, now the plant will have to build at least 30 units per year.

"Pervy Tekhnichesky" figured out why this production volume does not align with plans for the serial production volumes of the SJ-100.
