The Soviet light aircraft An-2 may find a new application in combating drones. This was reported by analysts of the Telegram channel "Voennaya Khronika".
According to them, the biplane is characterized by short takeoff and landing, as well as low stall speed. The maximum speed of the An-2 is about 190 km/h, which allows it to be used against a number of slow unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to the author of the publication, modifications of turboprop aircraft, including the L-410, can also become anti-drone platforms. For this purpose, they need to be equipped with containers for launching interceptors and equipment for detecting drones.
Earlier, the Chaplygin Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute proposed restoring the airworthiness of up to 700 An-2 aircraft. In the future, such a fleet could also be used for air traffic control tasks.
