NPO YaMZ and Uralmashzavod have begun developing a fully domestic tunnel boring complex

The project is being implemented for "Bamtonnelstroi-Most" with production split between the DPR and Yekaterinburg

The Research and Production Association "Yasinovatsky Machine-Building Plant" in the DPR and Uralmashzavod in Yekaterinburg have begun joint design of a tunnel boring complex for the company "Bamtonnelstroi-Most," part of Ruslan Baisarov's group. This was reported to TASS by NPO "YaMZ" founder Vladimir Trubchanin.

According to him, the cooperation started in 2025 and has already "advanced quite far" in terms of individual assemblies. Production is divided between the two sites: some assemblies will be manufactured in Yasinovataya, while others will be produced at Uralmashzavod in Yekaterinburg.

"BTS-Most" is one of Russia's largest contractors in tunnel and metro construction, having grown out of the Soviet "Bamtonnelstroi" established in 1975. The company is carrying out projects on the Baikal-Amur Mainline, in Moscow, Novosibirsk, and Krasnoyarsk; in particular, it is building the first line of the Krasnoyarsk metrotram. In 2025, the holding acquired a controlling stake in the St. Petersburg institute "Metrogiprotrans."

The project could become the first fully localized solution in the class of tunnel boring complexes. Today, Russian tunnel construction depends on foreign equipment: German Herrenknecht, American Robbins, and Chinese CREG machines. The development of a domestic equivalent fits into the logic of import substitution in heavy engineering and at the same time integrates Donbas production capacities into Russian industrial chains.
