ROAD announces the aging of the Russian car fleet by half

Association of car dealers calls for the launch of recycling programs

According to the Association of Russian Car Dealers (ROAD), the Russian car fleet has aged significantly, and the share of cars older than 10 years has reached 72%. To rejuvenate the car fleet, it is necessary to activate preferential recycling programs and stimulate sales of new cars, according to ROAD.

Today, among passenger cars, the share of old cars is 72.2%, while in 2015 it was 48.9%. For light commercial vehicles, this figure is also high: 58.8% of old models in 2015 increased to 76%. The total number of aged cars in the country reached 33 million out of 46.22 million. The average age of a car is 16-17 years.

The head of ROAD, Alexey Podshchekoldin, emphasizes that to change the situation, it is critical to increase sales of new cars to 3 million per year. This level of sales could significantly reduce the share of old cars over the next 10 years. In 2025, only 1.33 million passenger cars were sold.

ROAD has launched an initiative to restore recycling programs at the state level. The association plans to appeal to the government with this request, as otherwise the average age of vehicles in Russia may exceed 20 years in five years.
