Tornado-S MLRS Enhanced with New Guided Missiles with Gliding Warhead

The range of the new ammunition can reach 220 km

The ammunition load of the Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) has been supplemented with previously unknown guided missiles (URMs). Military expert Evgeny Damantsev came to this conclusion while studying new footage demonstrating the operation of the combat system.

He noted that the missiles can be identified by the characteristic aerodynamic configuration of the fairing. Presumably, we are talking about ammunition with indices 9M557 and 9M558. Damantsev did not rule out that the footage showed fundamentally new rockets with a gliding warhead.

It is likely that we are talking about a guided missile with a gliding warhead, the range of which can be 180-220 km. Full photos with all the compartments of the new guided missiles have not yet appeared anywhere.

Damantsev also stated that the development of these munitions changes the very concept of using the Tornado-S.

Specialists of NPO Splav continue to turn promising long-range Tornado-S MLRS into a full-fledged operational-tactical missile system, the new missiles of which will be able to more effectively overcome anti-missile barriers.

The high efficiency of the Tornado-S was previously confirmed by the head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov. According to him, even advanced foreign air defense systems are not capable of intercepting guided missiles of the system. The guidance algorithms do not allow rockets to deviate from the target by more than 1.5 m.
