From January 1, 2026, more than 60 new road signs and sign plates will be introduced in Russia. The changes aim to improve the regulation of personal mobility devices, enhance pedestrian protection, and consider environmental factors in the urban environment. Many new signs have already been tested in the capital.
The planned changes stem from the updated GOST R 52289-2019. They cover not only independent signs of various shapes (round, square, triangular, and rectangular), but also additional information plates. For example, among the innovations, new pictograms will appear for the "Paid Parking" sign, indicating payment methods such as payment via application and SMS.
In addition, the list of innovations will include a "Stop Line" sign, intended for places without the possibility of horizontal markings. A sign with the recommended speed when passing artificial bumps will also be introduced, which will help increase driver comfort and reduce vehicle wear.
The change also concerns the width of parking spaces: it will be reduced from 2.5 meters to 2.25 meters for more efficient use of space.
The development of the new GOST took three years and was carried out with the participation of experts from the Center for Traffic Management of Moscow. The new signs should make city streets safer and more convenient for all road users.
