The United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec State Corporation) conducted water ingestion tests of the new PD-8 engine for the SJ-100 aircraft. The power plant confirmed reliable operation during heavy rain, which is considered one of the most difficult weather conditions for the unit.
Specialists at UEC-Saturn created equipment capable of spraying several tons of water. Fedor Mironov, Deputy Director for Sales at UEC, explained that engineers were tasked with testing the PD-8's performance during heavy rainfall.
The engine has once again proven the correctness of the design solutions used. The tests were carried out as normal, the PD-8 worked without any issues, confirmed the stated characteristics and reliable operation.
Main technical characteristics of PD-8:
- Overall pressure ratio — 28
- Thrust — 8,056 kgf (at maximum take-off mode)
- Specific fuel consumption — 0.61 kg/kgf·h (in cruising mode)
- Length (with mixer) — 3,589 mm
- Fan diameter — 1,228 mm
At the UEC test bench, the impact of heavy rain on the engine during aircraft take-off, climb, and approach was recreated.
