Russia has announced successful tests of the 2M39 Poseidon strategic underwater vehicle. Military expert Evgeny Damantsev spoke about the characteristics of the new super torpedo.
According to him, the estimated displacement of the Poseidon is about 55 tons, which is 30 times more than the typical Fizik torpedo. The warhead is estimated to reach 20-25 megatons. In terms of total power, it is several times greater than the aggregate of warheads of the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
The nuclear power plant of the device is capable of producing up to 8 MW, in "sneak mode" - only 100-400 kW.
Damantsev paid special attention to stealth. The water-jet propulsion unit promises minimal cavitation, the units are mounted on multi-tiered shock absorbers.
The cruising speed is in the range of 20-35 knots, the maximum speed is up to 65-80 knots. Navigation is inertial with bottom correlation and AI algorithms; in the final section - an active-passive hydroacoustic homing head.
It will be extremely difficult to detect the device in "sneak mode" with standard long-range airborne hydroacoustic systems.
It is known that the "Poseidon"is equipped with a nuclear power plant. The power of the underwater torpedo significantly exceeds the power of the most promising Russian intercontinental ballistic missile - Sarmat.
