The "Heart" of the Presidential Il-96-300: PS-90A Aircraft Engine Opens a New Era in Aircraft Construction

The fourth-generation unit provided a technological leap for aviation enterprises

The United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec) spoke about fourth-generation gas turbine aircraft engines, which marked a technological leap in the industry.

When creating aircraft engines in the 1970s-1990s, the cycle parameters were significantly increased, which improved technical characteristics. The compression ratio increased to 30-35, the gas temperature in front of the turbine heated up to 1600-1700 K, and the bypass ratio to 4-6.

To ensure the competitive weight of the engine with an increased bypass ratio, composite polymer materials began to be used for parts of the outer contour and nacelle.

A powerful technological leap in Russian civil aircraft engine construction was made during the development of the PS-90A at the Perm Design Bureau under the leadership of General Designer Pavel Alexandrovich Solovyov. Compared to the 3rd generation D-30KU/KP engines, the cycle parameters of the PS-90A were radically increased.

The bypass ratio was increased almost 2 times, the total compression ratio in the compressor was increased 1.9 times, and the gas temperature in front of the turbine was increased by 200 K. This made it possible to reduce the cruising specific fuel consumption by 15%. The parametric "leap" and a significant increase in fuel efficiency were achieved through the use of a complex of advanced technologies and materials for that time.

The PS-90A engine implemented the latest principles of control, maintainability and operational manufacturability for its time in general, through the development of the modular design principle.

Currently, the unit is used, among other things, on the presidential Il-96-300PU airliner.

Earlier www1.ru reported that Russia will invest 765 billion rubles in the project "Production of airplanes and helicopters".
