The Russian army is armed with the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system (SAM), capable of destroying targets at a range of 500 km, even beyond the radio horizon. However, the complex may be vulnerable to small-sized means of attack, warned aviation engineer and pilot Valery Ageev.
According to him, the radar station (RLS) of the "Prometheus" is not able to detect a small-sized target at any range. For low-flying targets, the reflected signal will be lost against the background of reflections from the ground.
Low-flying targets may also be below the radar horizon. If the target is flying at a low altitude, then the radar signal will not be able to reach the target due to the fact that the earth is round, then cruise missiles flying at low altitudes become less vulnerable to air defense systems.
The specialist recalled that the range of 500 km is shooting beyond the radio horizon. Stations at the launch site do not see these targets, so target designation from external sources is necessary.
Let's say, from the same A-50 or A-100 aircraft, which is being developed today. Therefore, it is important that the S-500 is integrated into such an information and communication system, otherwise they simply will not be able to effectively perform their task.
Characteristics of the S-500 "Prometheus" SAM system:
- Maximum target engagement altitude — 200 km
- Maximum target engagement speed — 7 km/s
- Target detection range — 800 km
- Combat radius — 600 km
- Number of missiles — 2-4 units
The training of military personnel to work on the "Prometheus" has been going on since 2017. The S-500 replaces the S-400 "Triumph" SAM system on combat duty.
