The new heavy aircraft engine being created in Russia will have a thrust of 26 tons; in the future, the unit will be used for both military transport aircraft and a new wide-body passenger airliner. This was announced by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Denis Manturov.
According to him, when the decision was made to work on the project, the thrust of a 35-ton gas generator was taken as a basis for the development of new technologies.
The engine has already successfully passed bench tests and has repeatedly entered takeoff mode, reaching a thrust of 35 tons.
In carrying out the work, more than 20 technologies were used, and we came up with technical solutions that provide tasks for both military transport and civil aviation.
Manturov emphasized that for a promising transport aircraft weighing 100 tons for the tasks of the Ministry of Defense, it is more appropriate to use an engine with a thrust of 26 tons — the PD-26. The unit can also be used for a promising wide-body passenger aircraft.
