The munition is used in the S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile system. The 40N6 is capable of shooting down even over-the-horizon targets.

New missile

The 40N6 is an extra-long-range SAM designed to engage strategic bombers, AWACS and EW aircraft, airborne command posts, hypersonic ballistic and cruise missiles.

According to official data, the range is up to 380 km for aerodynamic targets and up to 15 km for ballistic targets, the average flight speed is 1190 m/s, and the altitude is from 10 m to 35 km. Thanks to the new homing head, the 40N6 can destroy aircraft beyond the radio visibility of ground-based radars.

The missile was developed by MKB Fakel, and mass production is carried out by MMZ Avangard. The anti-aircraft missiles of the S-400 complex previously in service (9M96, 48N6, 48N6DM) provided target engagement at a range of up to 250 km.
