Last year, the average age of cars used by Russian families increased to 11.5 years. This data was obtained from an analysis of comprehensive monitoring of the living conditions of Russians, conducted by Rosstat.
The study is conducted every two years and covers 60 thousand households. The study involves a sample survey of representatives of various groups and segments of the population living in all regions of Russia. The latest study was conducted in 2022.
According to information provided by the statistical service, in 2024, the average age of vehicles owned or leased by Russian families was 11.5 years. This is 4.4 years more than in the previous study, when the average age of cars was 7.1 years. In 2020, this figure was 8.4 years, and in 2018 — 10 years.
In 2024, the proportion of families owning a car decreased to 49.3% from 49.6%. However, this figure is still higher than in 2020 and 2018.
Interestingly, when people explain why they don't have a car, they are less likely to talk about a lack of money and more likely to cite other reasons. If in 2022, 50.1% of families did not have money for a car, now there are 47.4% of such families. At the same time, 43.4% of respondents cite non-monetary reasons, although in 2022 there were 40.6% of such respondents.
Two years ago, the Avtostat resource published data on the average age of the car fleet in Russia. According to this information, as of January 1, 2023, the average age of passenger cars in the country was 14.7 years.
