MTS operator has completed the construction of base stations at two polar stations - "Vostok" and "Mirny", located at the South Pole of Cold. Now MTS mobile communication is available for polar explorers of all five year-round Russian stations in the Antarctic region, the company's press service reports.
The MTS digital ecosystem, with the support of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), has built base stations in Antarctica at two polar stations - "Vostok", where the South Pole of Cold is located, and "Mirny". Now MTS mobile communication is provided to polar explorers of all five year-round Russian stations in the Antarctic region .
A mobile communication base station was installed at the "Mirny" polar station. This made it possible to use mobile phones in one of the most important areas for scientific research and at the same time dangerous corners of Antarctica.
In this area, the coast of the mainland is a high snow-ice barrier, reaching 20 meters. And at the exit to the ice dome there are many deep cracks. Now polar explorers at "Mirny" can use GSM standard communication throughout the station, including the parking area for ships.
In the new wintering complex of the Antarctic "Vostok" station, communication is provided by two components: internal antennas and a radiating cable. The same cable was used during the construction of the network in the tunnels of the St. Petersburg metro.
In a short time, about a kilometer of coaxial cable and more than 30 antennas were installed in the premises of the wintering complex. Outside the complex, at a distance of several tens of kilometers, communication is provided by an external all-weather antenna.
