At the Institute of Thermophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), a line of installations has been developed to simulate emergency processes at nuclear power plants (NPPs). This was announced by the chief researcher of the institute, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Sciences Nikolai Pribaturin.
It is unsafe to simulate accident scenarios in real time at operating stations. Scientists have created a database of verification data that will help to work out possible risks in laboratory conditions. The specialists also simulated the situation of a break in the main circulation pipeline with coolant - one of the main risks at nuclear power plants.
According to the scientist, in such a situation, the first thing that happens is damage to the heat-insulating material and structures around the pipeline. Thanks to the modeling, recommendations were given to strengthen the heat-insulating material and structural elements surrounding the pipeline. Experiments have also shown that in the event of a pipeline rupture, the jet power decreases rapidly, and the concrete shell around the pipeline is able to withstand the jet power in the event of an accident.
