Innovation will improve the comfort and safety of trips

Scientists from the Volgograd State Technical University (Volgograd State Technical University) have developed a "smart" car suspension that uses an algorithm that automatically adjusts to road irregularities. This innovation significantly improves the comfort and safety of trips.

Modern car suspensions, based on hydraulic shock absorbers and elastic elements, have a fixed stiffness. This limits their ability to adapt to changing road conditions, which leads to a decrease in ride smoothness and increased suspension wear. To solve this problem, scientists proposed a combined damping system (CDS), which combines various types of shock absorbers — hydraulic, air, friction, inertial and dynamic.

CDS provides variable stiffness, which allows suspensions to automatically adapt to driving conditions. Studies have shown that one of the CDS configurations, tested on a KamAZ-4308 truck, demonstrated a 10% reduction in the mean square accelerations of the body and a 40% improvement in vehicle stability.

The project used modern methods of theoretical mechanics and experimental research. Scientists have already received 11 patents for new damping units and continue to work on their improvement.
