Airport in Cheboksary to be modernized in 2025

This is the first of the Russian airports to be renovated with funds from the Air Transport Infrastructure Development Fund

This was reported by Rosaviatsiya following a meeting between the head of Rosaviatsiya Dmitry Yadrov and the head of the Chuvash Republic Oleg Nikolaev in Moscow. According to the plan, the modernization of the airfield infrastructure of the Cheboksary airport (ICAO code: UWKS) will begin in 2025.

Cheboksary will be the first domestic airport where we will carry out a major overhaul of the airfield at the expense of the Air Transport Infrastructure Development Fund, which is being created on behalf of the President. For the further dynamic development of Chuvashia, the convenience of its residents and guests, it is extremely important to have a modern and comfortable airport complex.

In February 2024, President Vladimir Putin instructed the federal government to take measures to reconstruct the airfield infrastructure of the Cheboksary airport. A regulatory legal act providing for the financing of these works from the funds of the created Air Transport Infrastructure Development Fund is planned before the end of 2024.

Currently, the airport is undergoing reconstruction, which includes a complete redesign of the existing airport terminal building. The air harbor will not be the only one that will be updated: according to the Ministry of Transport as of March 2024, there are 228 airfields in Russia, and by 2030 there will be 242. At the same time, 116 airfields require major repairs and reconstruction.

It is planned to repair at least 50 airfields by 2030, which will require about 12 billion rubles annually. It is planned to carry out these works by increasing air navigation fees, the operator will be the State Air Traffic Management Corporation ― FSUE "State ATM Corporation".

The FAS has already approved an increase in air navigation rates for Russian carriers operating flights within the country by 37%, and increased the rates for international flights by 100%. The Association of Air Transport Operators (AATO) then appealed to the Ministry of Transport with a request to adjust these plans to increase fees for the airfield reconstruction fund. The AATO warns of rising costs, rising ticket prices and a decrease in demand for flights within the country, which are actually social.

Also, as noted by the "Kommersant" publication, which had the text of the appeal to the Ministry of Transport at its disposal, the AATO proposes to generally revise the order on increasing fee rates. In particular, they consider it appropriate to impose increased air navigation fees on foreign air carriers as well. Based on the fact that they also use Russian aviation infrastructure. It is proposed to increase fees for air navigation for flights to the Russian Federation and for transit flights for them.
