Зону для отработки системы поиска людей по Wi-Fi создадут в Новосибирске

First test data expected by the end of 2024

The Siberian State University of Telecommunications and Informatics (SibGUTI) in Novosibirsk is launching a pilot zone to test a domestic system capable of determining a person's location indoors with an accuracy of 5-7 meters using Wi-Fi. The development, carried out under a state contract with the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, will be installed in the university's fifth building, equipped with "Eltex" equipment. The first test results are expected by the end of 2024.

According to Yuri Zazuli, Rector of SibGUTI, the system is designed to determine the location of mobile devices indoors, which can be useful in various fields, including search operations, parental control, orientation inside large buildings, and assistance to people with disabilities.

The system works by analyzing the signals of access points and the signal levels from these points to the device being searched for. Even if the device is not registered on the network, the system will be able to determine its coordinates using the trilateration method. The more Wi-Fi access points around, the more accurate the result.

Accurate indoor positioning has previously been problematic due to weak signals from satellites and low accuracy of positioning via mobile network base station signals (up to 300-500 meters). As part of the pilot project, which will be located on the first floor of the university's fifth building, it is planned to test the system's algorithms in real-world events and conferences.

Previously, scientists had already tested the system in university buildings and in one of Novosibirsk's schools. The pilot zone will improve accuracy and demonstrate the system to potential users and partners, as well as support the scaling of the development.
