The Russian Ministry of Defense has provided more details about the 2S41 "Drok" self-propelled 82-mm mortar from Rostec, which was recently received by the Russian troops.
This complex, based on the Typhoon armored vehicle, is designed to suppress enemy manpower and light armored vehicles, blind its observation posts, illuminate the territory, and create smoke screens.
The "Drok" mortar crew consists of four people, and its main weapon is mounted in an armored turret, meaning that it can fire without the crew leaving the vehicle. Its ammunition load contains more than forty mines. If the crew does have to leave the vehicle, they can use an additional portable 2B24 mortar in the "Drok" configuration.
The complex takes less than a minute to switch from the traveling position to the combat position. The "Drok" is equipped with mechanized aiming drives and a modern fire control system. It is equipped with a remotely controlled combat module with a circular rotation machine gun and an optoelectronic sight.
The firing range of the 2S41 is more than 1.5 times higher than that of the standard 2B14 "Podnos" mortars. It is 6 kilometers. At this distance, the "Drok" can hit targets with an intensity of more than ten rounds per minute.
This mortar has good bulletproof and mine protection and has the maneuverability to quickly evade enemy fire. It can reach speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour on the highway and travel 500 kilometers on the highway.
However, this is not the limit of its characteristics. Recently, Rostec announced its readiness to modernize the "Drok" based on the recommendations of the military.
