Despite the emergence of modern Su-35S and Su-57 fighters, the legendary MiG-29 still remains in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces. This combat aircraft first took to the skies back in 1977, but continues to perform combat missions today.
"Pervy Tekhnichesky" answers three main questions about the famous aircraft.
How many MiG-29s does Russia have left?
The exact number of active aircraft is not disclosed; media reported at least 90 modernized MiG-29s of various versions.
Some of the aircraft have been upgraded to the MiG-29SMT standard. Such aircraft received increased fuel capacity, modern avionics, new navigation systems, and the ability to use a wide range of high-precision weapons.
Although the backbone of front-line aviation today consists of the Su-30SM and Su-35S families, the MiG-29 still remains an important element of Russian fighter aviation.
What missiles does the MiG-29 carry?
Initially, the aircraft was designed as a light front-line fighter for air superiority. Therefore, its main weapon became air-to-air missiles.
The MiG-29 is capable of using R-73 short-range missiles with high maneuverability, as well as R-27 family medium-range missiles. Modernized versions have gained the ability to use more advanced weapons.
In addition, the aircraft can carry guided and free-fall bombs, unguided rockets, and various weapons for striking ground targets.
In fact, modern versions of the MiG-29 have evolved from a pure fighter into a multi-role combat aircraft.
Why is the MiG-29 called one of the best fighters of its generation?
The main feature of the aircraft is its outstanding maneuverability. The designers created a very light and compact machine with two engines, which performs excellently in close air combat.
The MiG-29 went down in history as one of the most successful fighters of the fourth generation. And although today it is gradually being replaced by newer machines, the legendary aircraft continues to remain in service almost half a century after its first flight.
