Why tires are placed on the wings of Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers: it's a military trick

Tires confuse the operation of target identification systems

Russian military personnel, by placing tires on Tu-95 and Tu-160 missile-carrying bombers and other strategic aircraft, are confusing the operation of target identification systems with which weapons are equipped.

Chief Technology Officer of the US Central Command, Schuyler Moore, noted that this measure confuses the guidance systems of drones and missiles, which compare the received images with the onboard database.

Therefore, if you place tires on top of the wings, it becomes difficult for many computer vision models to understand exactly which aircraft is in the camera's lens.

The use of tires on strategic aviation aircraft was first recorded in the fall of 2023, when images appeared of Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers surrounded by them at an airbase.

Such tricks concern not only tires, but also many other measures, for example, when the military resorts to non-standard coloring of the sides. In the American press, the list of tricks designed to deceive computer vision includes drawing silhouettes of airplanes at airbases or submarines in docks.
