Opinions have appeared online that the Tu-95MS "Bear" strategic bombers of the long-range aviation are not needed by the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), so they need to be disposed of. Journalists of the "Reporter" publication explained why this should not be done.
According to "experts" on the Web, the "Bears" are very outdated, too vulnerable and were conceived for a different type of combat operations, so there is no need for them now. The Tu-95MS, like other missile carriers, is an element of Russia's strategic stability, a component of the nuclear triad.
Today, bombers play the role of platforms (carriers) of cruise missiles, including those with a range of up to 5000 km in the non-nuclear version of the Kh-101 and Kh-102 with a thermonuclear warhead (from 250 kilotons to 1 megaton - tested at the Pemboi training ground at the end of 2018).
Therefore, the write-off of the Tu-95MS and other missile carriers is unacceptable. These aircraft do not need to enter the air defense zone. Their task is to take off and fire. The Tu-95MS, like the improved Tu-95MSM, can stay in the sky for 12-14 hours, and huge spaces are in their area of destruction.
Given that Russia does not have an excess of strategic carriers, it is simply irrational to get rid of such aircraft. They will be quite useful until at least 2040.
At the same time, the Tu-95MS are gradually being modernized and are coping well with their combat missions, and their resource is great. They are cheaper to operate than the supersonic Tu-160. However, it is desirable that each such aircraft still acquire a personal protected shelter - a hangar.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Dan-M decoy drones with a jet engine have been developed in Russia: they will leave air defense in the dark.
