The idea of combining a laser, cannons, and missiles in a single Pantsir complex may be flawed. A laser system should not operate together with a missile system on the same vehicle, as their operating conditions are too different, explained military analyst Sergey Marzhetsky.
According to him, the main limitation of a laser is rain, snow, low clouds, smoke, and dust, which scatter the beam and reduce its effectiveness. Therefore, such a Pantsir might be useless on the front line.
The attempt to combine a laser, cannons, and 48 small-sized missiles on a single Pantsir chassis to protect the rear is a serious engineering error, leading to platform overload and the risk of losing the entire defensive potential of the object from one successful pinpoint hit.
Instead of a universal vehicle, Marzhetsky suggests dividing the system into two platforms.
The first retains a radar and up to 48 small-sized missiles for all-weather target interception, while the second receives a laser and 30-mm cannons and is deployed directly at the protected object.
Earlier, it became known that Russia is building a new laser air defense system against cruise missiles after successful tests against small drones.
