Laser systems are considered a promising means of combating drones. However, their effectiveness depends on a condition that is difficult to ensure in real combat, explained air defense forces historian Yuri Knutov.
According to him, the laser beam must be held on one section of the object for a certain period of time. Any maneuver of the drone can disrupt the effect.
If a laser is detected, it is destroyed without problems: by mines, kamikaze drones, or artillery. There is no difficulty here.
Atmospheric conditions further complicate the situation. Fog, rain, dust, and smoke can weaken the laser beam, reducing the effectiveness of the system.
Laser air defense in Russia is being created as part of the "Posokh" project. To increase efficiency, the system was integrated with radar, which allows for more accurate detection and tracking of "birds." According to the latest information, during tests, it was possible to achieve a range of 1.5 km.
