Theories about the loss of properties of the MC-21 composite wing due to prolonged exposure to kerosene have no basis, as there is no direct contact of fuel with the structure. Aviation expert Roman Gusarov told "Pervy Tekhnichesky" about this.

He reminded that the fuel tank in the MC-21 is located inside the caisson and is made of other materials.

Why should kerosene corrode carbon? The composite wing panel is 17.5 m long, it is solid. There are no joints there at all. The MC-21 with a composite wing is still participating in the test program. Everything is fine. And kerosene is stored there, there are no such problems.

Gusarov recalled the experience of foreign aviation. For example, the composite wing of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been used for many years, and there have been no reports of carbon fiber destruction due to aviation fuel.

Earlier, the former head of the Ulyanovsk branch of "Tupolev", Stanislav Ryzhakov, stated that "composites are afraid of kerosene", and expressed doubts that in the case of the MC-21, everything in this part has been properly checked.
