Specialists will build a dam approximately 300 m long on the Danube River to ensure the efficient operation of the cooling system of the Kozloduy NPP (located 5 km from the city of the same name). This was stated by the head of the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy, Iva Petrova.
The hydraulic structure will help solve the problem of critically low water levels in the Danube near the plant.
The decision was made after analyzing the hydrological situation and hydraulic modeling.
The construction of the dam will take about 15 days. All preparatory work has already been carried out, the minister concluded.
On August 21, Bulgarian nuclear scientists reduced the power of power unit No. 5 by 120 MW to avoid a potential emergency. Water from the Danube is used to cool steam in condensers. It is supplied from a pumping station located on the river bank.
Kozloduy NPP began operation in 1974. Soviet specialists participated in the construction of the plant. Nuclear fuel was also supplied to Bulgaria from the USSR. Currently, the NPP also purchases Russian-made equipment, which is necessary to maintain the operation of the reactors.
