Bulgaria has allowed the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to partially circumvent sanctions and purchase equipment from Russia necessary to maintain the operation of its power units.
The Bulgarian government has granted the plant the right to enter into separate public contracts with contractors for the import of iron and steel products of Russian origin. This refers to supplies needed to fulfill previously signed contracts and for the technical maintenance of existing systems.
The authorities emphasized that the exceptions are valid until all obligations under existing agreements are completed. The government's statement notes that the stable and safe operation of the plant directly depends on the regular supply of components from the equipment manufacturers specified in the plant's design.
A significant part of the Kozloduy NPP's systems are of Russian origin, so some contracts with Russian contractors retain critical technological importance for operation and nuclear safety.
