The Bulgarian authorities have allowed the management of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to continue purchasing the necessary equipment and materials from Russia. This was reported by the government press service.
Since most of the systems and equipment at the nuclear power plant are of Russian origin, some contracts for the supply of equipment related to the reliable and safe operation of Units 5 and 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant have been or will be concluded with Russian manufacturers.
The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is the only nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, producing more than one third of the country's total electricity output. In May 2024, Bulgaria abandoned Russian nuclear fuel for use with the plant's Russian equipment.
In November 2024, it was reported that the management of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant signed a contract to build new capacity at the plant with the American company Westinghouse Electric and South Korean Hyundai Engineering. Unit 7 is expected to be commissioned by 2035.
At present, only Units 5 and 6 with VVER-1000 reactors are operating in Bulgaria. They were connected to the grid in 1987 and 1991, but underwent modernization in 2005–2006 to extend their service life to 60 years.
