St. Petersburg metro builders have begun a key stage in the formation of the Karetnaya station on the Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya line. According to the "Podzemnik" channel, the first opening of the technological junction – the space from which the construction of the central hall will proceed – has begun deep underground. Previously, the KT-1.63 mechanized shield worked here: it drilled an inter-station tunnel from shaft No. 852 and moved towards "Ligovsky Prospekt-2".
Currently, workers are creating a traction-step-down substation – a "giant socket" without which trains will not run and escalators will not light up. This is a mandatory procedure for any deep station: it was from such junctions that the construction of the central hall of the Yugo-Zapadnaya station on the same line began in 2020, which is now in the final stages of finishing.
"Karetnaya" will be part of the second launch section of the line – from "Putilovskaya" to "Karetnaya" – and will be its terminus. The station received its name in 2014: the toponym is associated with Karetnaya Bridge and the historical Karetnaya part of the city.
According to the current project, "Karetnaya" will be a pylon, three-vaulted deep-level station with one island platform. Previously, designers considered a column structure, but in 2023, AO "Metrogiprotrans" changed the station type to pylon. A turnaround dead-end is provided from the "Ligovsky Prospekt-2" side.
The key function of the station is to provide a transfer to "Obvodny Kanal" of the Frunzensko-Primorskaya (purple) line, opened in 2010. According to the original plan, during the construction of "Obvodny Kanal", a two-level transfer hub for cross-platform connection with the future sixth line was supposed to be created, but this option was abandoned. The station will be located near the Obvodny Kanal embankment and the city bus station.
"Karetnaya" is being built as part of four new brown line stations, which are planned to be commissioned by 2030 together with "Bronevaya", "Zastavskaya", and "Borovaya". Tunnels on the section are being laid by mechanized shields of domestic production. After the completion of the second section, the Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya line will extend from the Krasnoselsky district to the Obvodny Kanal embankment in the central part of the city.
