The Bal coastal missile system has attracted attention with a new tactic for using X-35 missiles, based on low-altitude flight and reduced visibility for detection systems. This solution allows ammunition to remain outside the reliable detection zone of radar stations for as long as possible and reduces the time available to air defense crews to make a decision.
The complex is based on anti-ship missiles of the X-35 family of various modifications. After launch, they descend to an altitude of only 3-5 meters above the water surface and continue their flight, using the terrain and reflections from the underlying surface. Thanks to this, radars detect the target much later compared to missiles flying at high altitudes.
Another feature of the X-35 is the coordinated attack tactic. Several missiles can simultaneously approach the target from different directions, distributing targets among themselves and complicating the work of air defense systems. This approach increases the load on detection and interception means.
Despite its subsonic speed, the X-35 compensates for it with a combination of stealth, low flight altitude, and a complex target approach scheme. These features are considered the main advantage of the Bal complex, as they allow the missile to use not speed, but minimal visibility and tactical techniques to increase the probability of overcoming layered air defense.
