The Il-114-300 has received a type certificate and can formally carry passengers. But now it has to prove that it is indeed capable of operating where aerodrome infrastructure ends, explained Sergey Sukhar, chief pilot of the Il company and Honored Test Pilot of Russia.
The Il-114-300 will also be tested at high temperatures and in high-altitude conditions.
We are also working on improving takeoff and landing characteristics: we expect that both the takeoff and landing distances will decrease, and as a result, the aircraft will be operated from shorter runways.
Some airlines openly question the effectiveness of the Il-114-300 on unpaved surfaces due to the too low position of the TV7-117ST-01 turboprop engines.
Aviation expert Oleg Panteleev noted that engineers have come up with some kind of protection for the Il-114-300 turboprop engines that is additionally mounted. But so far, no photos have been released to the public, so it is impossible to judge this.
