Russia brought secret cargo to Hmeymim airbase

The General Cargo type dry cargo ship "Sparta" can even carry tanks and infantry fighting vehicles

The Russian cargo ship "Sparta" arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus under the escort of Russian Navy warships. This is the first supply vessel at the Hmeymim base since the change of power in Damascus, The Wall Street Journal reported.

What exactly was on board the ship is unknown. However, "Sparta" is 126 meters long and has a deadweight of 6,785 tons with a horizontal ramp and powerful cranes, which allows for quick loading and unloading of heavy cargo, equipment, and military containers.

The dry cargo ship can carry infantry fighting vehicles, self-propelled artillery systems, or even tanks. Two ship cranes with a lifting capacity of 240 tons each allow for lifting super-heavy indivisible loads. The trawler was built in Japan in 1998.

In the autumn of 2025, Russia resumed flights to the Hmeymim airbase after a six-month pause.

Between October 24 and 26, at least two Russian aircraft flew to Syria. A Russian Air Force Il-62M transport aircraft departed from Libya to Latakia on October 26, and then returned to the Moscow region.
