Half-century-old MiG-29s found new purpose in combating "Lyutyi" drones

The fighter jet is equipped with air-to-air missiles with infrared homing heads

Fourth-generation MiG-29 combat aircraft have begun to be used in the fight against drones. This was reported by a retired pilot, author of the Fighterbomber Telegram channel.

This is the first confirmed instance of the MiG-29 being used specifically against an aerial threat. Previously, Su-30SM, Su-35S, and even new Su-57 aircraft, as well as Mi-28N and Ka-52 helicopters, were known to be used against drones.

Fighterbomber clarified that the MiG-29 was equipped with air-to-air missiles with infrared homing heads, and one such munition was used specifically against the An-196 "Lyutyi" drone.

The MiG-29's onboard equipment also allows the use of a 30-mm automatic cannon, which has high firing accuracy.

Recall that the MiG-29 first took to the skies about 50 years ago. Earlier, "Pervyy Tekhnicheskiy" provided a detailed account of the fighter's history.
