The Su-47 "Berkut" fighter with a forward-swept wing played a key role in the creation of the Su-57. It was on this aircraft that internal weapon bays – one of the main elements of fifth-generation aircraft – were first tested, said test pilot Sergey Bogdan of the Sukhoi Design Bureau.
According to him, the "Berkut" was used as a "flying laboratory" in two directions at once.
The characteristics of the forward-swept wing, including critical phenomena, were tested. Secondly, a large series of flights with cargo compartments was performed.
Bogdan also said that during the tests of the Su-47 "Berkut" fighter, navigation equipment failure forced an emergency take-off of an Su-25 for escort and landing with an emergency fuel reserve.
