The Russian Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) has been equipped with a global navigation satellite system (GLONASS) for more accurate strikes, the Russian Ministry of Defense has officially announced.
The complex's launchers are also equipped with a modern computerized system, the ministry added. Apparently, targeting is now done using target coordinates.
The Tornado-S was adopted in 2015, but 11 years later, active modernization of the equipment continues. For example, engineers at NPO «Splav» created improved 9M542 shells for the MLRS — during testing, the circular probable deviation was reduced to 1.5 meters.
Each of the munitions is equipped with a jam-resistant CRPA antenna from the «Cometa-M» line, making it invulnerable to electronic warfare.
The firing accuracy of Tornado-S shells is 15–20 times higher than that of its predecessor, the Smerch MLRS, making the system comparable in combat power to the American HIMARS.
