Irkutsk National Research Technical University (IRNITU) is actively conducting research to optimize hardening processes. These efforts are aimed at minimizing uncontrolled deformations of part shapes and significantly increasing their service life. The research is being conducted as part of the "Priority 2030" program commissioned by PJSC "Yakovlev".

Associate Professor Oleg Samoilenko from Irkutsk Technical University has proposed a new way to improve aircraft. He has figured out how to make them stronger and less prone to deformation. Usually, aircraft surfaces are strengthened with shot peening. However, this can lead to slight warping of the parts.

Samoilenko suggested slightly changing the shape of the parts before shot peening. To do this, he uses special rollers that roll over the parts, making them slightly flatter. This helps prevent warping during further processing.

These changes help:

  1. Make aircraft stronger.
  2. Improve the quality of parts that bend easily.
  3. Reduce stress in different parts of the aircraft, making it more reliable.

Warping of low-rigidity parts after surface hardening is a major problem because it cannot be corrected. If such parts are used in production, it will lead to complex assembly, which will create unforeseen mounting stresses. This adversely affects the fatigue strength of parts during prolonged operation.

The goal of the current research and development work is to evaluate the effectiveness of surface hardening for parts made of aluminum and titanium alloys, with an emphasis on increasing fatigue life.

PJSC "Yakovlev" is a leading manufacturer of SJ-100 and MC-21 commercial airliners in Russia.
