The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported the detection and escort of a group of Russian military aircraft near Alaskan airspace. The air echelon included two Tu-95MS strategic bombers, two Su-35S multi-role fighters, and an A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft.
The air targets were recorded within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (Alaska ADIZ). In response to the detection, NORAD command scrambled a fighter wing: two F-16 Fighting Falcons and two F-35A Lightning IIs. To ensure the duration of the patrol, four KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft were involved in the operation.
According to the official statement, the Russian aircraft did not cross the US and Canadian state border. All actions of the parties were carried out within the framework of established protocols for preventing incidents in airspace (INCSEA).
The ADIZ zone is not considered part of sovereign airspace, but requires operators to submit flight plans in advance and maintain radio contact.
Earlier today, an unknown Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from the USA crossed the Russian border. The Flightradar service recorded a mysterious flight of an American aircraft.
