The time of aircraft carriers has already passed; the Russian Navy now has more modern weapons systems. This was stated by State Duma deputy Andrei Kolesnik.
According to him, the name "Admiral Kuznetsov" will be given to some submarine or surface ship. The parliamentarian noted that aircraft carriers are currently used mainly for psychological pressure on the enemy.
At present, carrier strike groups do not pose a danger to Russia, because they are destroyed by missiles from submarines. We have multipurpose submarines known as "aircraft carrier killers." They are armed with missiles that are not deterred by any air defense.
In July 2025, it became known that the "Admiral Kuznetsov" is going to be mothballed. Let us recall that the Project 1143.5 aircraft carrier had been under repair since 2017. According to various estimates, about 100 billion rubles were spent on it.
Chairman of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Andrei Kostin noted that continuing repairs on the "Admiral Kuznetsov" is pointless because of obsolescence and the high cost of the work.
