Artificial intelligence carries both opportunities and serious risks, warns Gennady Lepeshko, Chairman of the Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of Belarus and Russia on Security and Defense. According to him, AI technologies make it possible to create convincing fake content that can be used for political manipulation and fraud.
The deputy noted that modern algorithms are capable of instantly generating videos, audios, and texts that are practically indistinguishable from reality. This undermines trust in information and makes it difficult to separate truth from fiction. Unverified information can provoke conflict situations, including in the international arena, and highly realistic AI materials can be used to discredit people and manipulate public opinion.
Lepeshko emphasized that AI technologies increase the effectiveness of cyber threats. With their help, hackers automate phishing attacks and find vulnerabilities in software, and can also collect detailed digital profiles of users without their consent. According to the parliamentarian, the main risk lies not in the technology itself, but in the speed and scale of its unscrupulous use.
Artificial intelligence is developing faster than legislation and critical thinking skills among the population. This creates a threat to information security, undermines trust in the media, and complicates protection against fraud and cyberattacks.
