What problems await Russian airlines in 2026

Experts talk about the main challenges for the aviation industry

Aging aircraft and a decrease in the purchasing power of the population will become key challenges for Russian airlines in 2026. According to experts, the industry will have to simultaneously keep prices down and reduce transport capacity in order to maintain profits. The information is provided by RBC.

In 2025, Russian aviation withstood difficult conditions: sanctions, the absence of new equipment deliveries, and rising costs for servicing old aircraft. Passenger traffic decreased moderately - in three quarters, airlines carried 84 million people, only 2.5% less than a year earlier.

Experts note that in 2026, the main difficulties are associated with a gradual reduction in the number of serviceable aircraft. The aging fleet complicates maintenance, increases inspection times and reduces flight hours. Even the new Russian MC-21 and SJ100, which are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, will not be able to compensate for the retiring aircraft and will occupy only a small share of the fleet.

Airlines have already adapted to the new conditions. Since 2022, the industry has increased its competence in repairing foreign equipment, and new facilities have been opened for engine maintenance. Some carriers may look for alternative schemes for supplying aircraft through third countries, similar to the practice used by some companies in 2024.

Financial pressure remains an important factor. The increase in costs for airport services, maintenance and salaries increases the burden on carriers. At the same time, the decline in incomes of the population restrains the demand for tickets, and companies are forced to balance between prices and supply. According to experts, major players such as Aeroflot will set the level of tariffs, and small carriers will focus on these indicators or look for new routes.

The route network in 2026 is unlikely to change dramatically. Experts expect the focus to remain on international flights with a stable ruble exchange rate and the gradual development of regional destinations within the country. New flights from the regions to neighboring countries and the opening of several southern airports may slightly change the balance between domestic and international transportation.
